Men’s Golf: Launching into a Successful Season

By Jake Boselli, Podcast and Video Team Manager

// The Acalanes men’s golf team (2-0 overall, 2-0 league) is driving its way through a promising start to the season. The set of boys this year expects great results for their season.

“The team has high expectations for the year. They are returning 7 seniors from last year. If they reach their [full] potential they believe they can win the league,” Head Coach Randy Jones said.

At Contra Costa Country Club on March 5, Acalanes competed against Las Lomas High School in a battle of the ages. Acalanes won the match by three strokes, which was led by a performance from senior Jake Elerts who shot a score of 39.

“It was great to see Jake step up and lead our team to victory. I am extremely excited to see how the rest of the year goes, especially with a senior-driven team,” senior Chase Regan said.

Even with a successful win, the team still has goals they want to achieve throughout the rest of the season. To achieve some of these goals, they must focus on the small details surrounding the game of golf.

“I’m hoping to work with the kids on course management and help them reach their scoring potential. The trick in golf is to score well even when you’re not having your best day. That often comes down to making good decisions on the course and minimizing the negative impacts of a missed shot,” Jones said.

On March 11, Acalanes participated in the Meadow Club Fairfax golf tournament, where the team matched up against some serious competition.

“Unfortunately, we did not play to the best of our abilities. It was a very difficult course, and a lot of us had a hard time putting on fast and tricky greens,” senior Nate Lyons said.

When Acalanes matched up against Los Lomas again on March 20, the match went in their favor, with Acalanes winning. Senior Guo An Wang led the way, shooting a team-low score of 37.

Looking into the future, the Dons have very important matches to look forward to this season. For their season to end the way they hope, they must face and overcome obstacles.

“I am looking forward to our match against Campolindo, they are really gonna challenge us and it will be good to see how we match up against them,” Lyons said.
