Former U.S. Diplomat Speaks at Acalanes

By Gwyneth Lee, Print Feature Editor

Heather Ward visited Acalanes High School for a Model United Nations (MUN) exclusive visit to speak about her experience as a former U.S. diplomat on Thursday, Dec. 4. During the visit, MUN students had the chance to ask her questions about her time doing federal public service.

Ward, an Acalanes alumni, has over 20 years of experience in federal public service for the  U.S. Agency of International Development and U.S. Department of State in Washington, D.C.

Ward explained her participation in multilateral affairs, which involve the cooperation of three or more countries to address shared global issues. She worked in the G20 Development Working Group, an intergovernmental organization of 19 sovereign countries to lead international economic cooperation.

After sharing her experience, Ward transitioned to a question-and-answer session for the Acalanes MUN students. She answered questions about her time abroad, requirements for foreign service, and expanded on her career. Some students asked questions about position papers as well, applying her experience to MUN conferences.

Today, Ward is the Management Analyst for the City of Lafayette, where she supports the city’s policy development, operational analysis, and community engagement.
